Notes:
The letter was sent from H.M.S.Glory, Spithead The letter, from (presumably Captain) Bowen, is (among other things) a request to Evan Nepean to "acquaint my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty" of the excellent performance of the timekeeper (chronometer) put on board HMS Glory by Mr Mudge during "six weeks of the worst weather that ever was met with at sea". At the end of the voyage, the timekeeper was found to be within 4 seconds of time. Bowen ends by stating he would never go on a voyage without this chronometer,"if it can be procured, and I can afford to purchase it". On the reverse of the letter is a pencil mark 5/- but no indication of who purchased it.
