February 2008 Digest
As usual February’s
Journal is packed with articles and news reports on a variety of horological
topics. Hints & Tips on
Clockmaking, the series by John Wilding, continues, along with the second
part of How to Make a Quartz Analogue Perpetual Calendar, and the latest
instalment by Chris McKay on Restoring the Great Clock of Westminster. Michael Lombardi reports from
Boulder, Colorado, on The Accuracy & Stability of Quartz Watches, and
Adrian Garner provides a very practical piece on Polishing. Alan Midleton continues his
fascinating study of The History of the BHI, now on Part 8, and in
celebration of our 150th Anniversary, the Journal continues the
theme of portraying ‘A Year in the Life of the BHI’ by featuring a photo of
tutor and overseas student working in the Clock Workshop, here at Upton Hall,
on our front cover. Talking of the
anniversary, plans are progressing nicely and the event, which runs over a
nine-day period in June, starts with a Symposium, featuring lectures and
demonstrations from the World’s top horologists. A Summer Show will follow,
culminating in the unveiling of the new Anniversary Clock, which the Project
150 team have been working on since the Millennium. Full details and booking
form in February’s edition – don’t miss it! Supplied

Articles of the month:-
|
Obituaries in the Horological Journal
From the earliest days of the BHI, obituaries of distinguished members and other horologists have been published in the HJ and frequently these are an invaluable source of information on the life and work of these persons. For the benefit of those undertaking research into 19th and 20th century horologists as well as those compiling family histories, we publish a complete list of HJ obituaries with dates. A letter B against a name indicates a brief notice, while the letter F indicates a full or lengthy obituary. A separate list covers obituaries from the Watch & Clockmaker" magazine.
Photocopies of single obituaries are free to BHI members. A charge will be made to non-members.
Our grateful thanks are due to Laura Dickinson who has spent many weeks
searching the HJ and compiling the list.
Key to Obituaries.
John Harrison in the Horological Journal
We have also made a list of John Harrison articles featured in the HJ. Again, single articles are free to BHI members and a charge will be made to non-members.
