Original covers lost, now bound in paper, probably later in the 18th century.  First page bears the stamp of University Library, Cambridge.

A pamphlet published no doubt to be presented to the Board of Longitude in an attempt to win the £20,000 prize.

The first part of the pamphlet concerns a type of quadrant invented by Rowe. 

The second part, pp. 13-47 is an "Essay on the Discovery of the Longitude, By a New Invention of an Everlasting Horometer: Founded on the most Unerring Principles of Nature."

Final pages are concerned with the effects of magnetism on chronometers and their rate.  One solution given is to mount the chronometer on a "Chronometrical Compass" which always keeps them in the same position at sea, with respect to the magnetic meridian.

Urbain (sic) Jurgensen described as "Chronometer-maker to the Danish Navy and Member of the Royal Society of Sciences at Copenhagen."

The author gives a brief precis of the developments in escapements for chronometers before describing his own, a variation of Earnshaw's spring detent escapement but one which utilises two very light escape wheels.
