This account is one of several similar experiments around this date to record the performance of a pendulum clock and determine the length of a pendulum vibrating seconds at different latitudes.  Frequent reference is made to others who have worked in this field, eg. Captain Henry Keter ( who assisted with preparations for this experiment), Basil Hall, Sir Thomas Brisbane, Mr Goldingham and Captain Sabine.

A full account of the experiments using two clocks by Shelton, the same clocks used on Captain Cook's circumnavigation of the globe.

Clocks were set up in four different locations;

London 

Brassa (Shetland Islands)

Hare Island (Greenland)

Melville Island ("in the Polar Sea")

Thus the clocks were tested between latitudes 51.31 and 74.47 and the length of a pendulum vibrating seconds in each was recorded.

Two chronometers were also used in these tests; Arnold No.112 and Parkinson & Frodsham No. 259.

Describes the two timepieces made to the highest standard (pendulum bobs 23 lbs, driving weights 3lbs), set up at right angles to each other, with pendulum bobs being two feet apart when at rest.  Behavior, rates, and stopping patterns of the clocks described.

Communication to the Society in the form of a letter, plus an engraving illustrating his invention, from the Author, of 62, Jermyn-street, St James's, dated Feb. 8, 1821.

An invention designed to overcome the somewhat clumsy method of putting clocks in beat, (by bending the crutch), with a more sophisticated adjustable screw and spring arrangement.
