Details of patent:  James Sweetman Eiffe, Esq., of 48 Lombard-street, City, for certain improvements in the manufacture of astronomical and other clocks, chronometers and watches.  Patent dated December 7th, 1847. Enrolled March 31st, 1848.

Patent concerns the arms of the balance constructed out of the radial line.

The pamphlet (possibly written by Arnold and Dent) describes an experiment carried out by Messrs. Arnold and Dent.  "The proposition was to select two meridians, the difference of longitude between which was considered to be accurately obtained, and then by transporting the chronometers from one of these meridians to the other, to ascertain the difference of longitude given by them, and compare it with the difference previously received as correct."

A description, with pull out engraving, of a large sundial of great complexity, "...one of the most august Things of its Kind that ever was attempted, and contains no less than 73 different Sorts of Dials, ...".

This sundial had long been taken down by the time this was written and the account of it was taken from a book by a Jesuit, Fr. Hall.

Illustrated in a fold-out engraving (290mm x 200mm), "The Grand Pyramidical & Multiform Dial; Set up in the Privy Garden at White Hall. July 24, 1669."
