Report on the scientific studies carried out on this subject by Captain Kater.

First sentences reveal the thrust of the research.

"The effect of resistances of various kinds on the vibrations of the pendulum is become a subject of increased importance, from its influence on the determination of a standard measure: for although the effect of these resistances on the time may be wholly inconsiderable, it is by no means superfluous to prove, by demonstrative evidence that they are actually insensible."

First part of this pamphlet, pp. 41-50, concern Scoresby's experiments with magnetism.

Final pages are concerned with the effects of magnetism on chronometers and their rate.  One solution given is to mount the chronometer on a "Chronometrical Compass" which always keeps them in the same position at sea, with respect to the magnetic meridian.

On front page after title, Ilbert writes in ink, "With a cursory glance at the rise and progress of Horology."

In fact, this piece has more to do with the development of the chronometer from the 17th century and of the invention of other devices (quadrants, sextants ect.) used to determine latitude and longitude.

Includes references to clocks and watches in literature, eg. Chaucer, Shakespeare.

Interesting and perhaps apocryphal snippet about a John Harrison longcase clock found in Lincoln in 1798.
