A detailed history of the famous Tompion table clock given by King Charles 2nd to the Countess of Castlemaine and thence to her son, the Duke of Grafton. The author describes (rather caustically) the replacement of the movement by Vulliamy in the 19th century and the gift of the original movement (grande sonnerie) to the Institute of Civil Engineers by Vulliamy.
