The smoky smell is caused by the deposit on it of smoky particles like soot, ashes, and various other combustion by-products. Harry is on the right track by suggesting washing the case with any of the many commercial products available. The object is to remove the smelly dirt that has been deposited on the clock case (and maybe even IN the clock case) without harming the finish. It really is a cleaning job, and any cleaning-wax preparation should be good. One product comes to mind: "LEMON PLEDGE". Obviously, you want to wash off the dirt, not just apply a polish. So several liberal applications, with frequent changes of the cleaning cloths or rags should be tried. Also, time is on your side, and ventilation will help waft away the aroma.
